Quick answer
Measure and compare CPU temperatures under idle and sustained load without relying on a single peak.
These steps explain how to gather comparable evidence with HWiNFO on Windows, rather than treating a single sensor reading as a diagnosis.
Understand the states
Idle means the system has settled with no intentional heavy workload; Windows background tasks can still cause brief spikes. Load refers to a defined repeatable workload, not a universal level that applies to every processor.
Measure idle consistently
Restart if appropriate, wait for background activity to settle, open HWiNFO Sensors, reset Minimum/Maximum and observe several minutes. Record CPU package temperature, package power, utilization and effective clocks.
Run a controlled load
Use a known workload of fixed duration, keep the cooling configuration unchanged and record the same sensors. Watch the sustained region rather than making conclusions from the first high reading.
Compare like for like
Use the same sensor across both runs. CPU package and individual core sensors can differ because they represent different measurement locations or aggregations. Consult the processor and system manufacturer for acceptable limits.
Investigate unexpected results
If temperatures are unusually high for the system, check case airflow, fan behavior, dust, power settings and recent changes. End testing if unstable; do not infer a hardware failure from one value.
Practical checklist
- Record hardware, driver and Windows versions.
- Use comparable conditions and one workload.
- Reset minimum and maximum readings before a run.
- Review sustained trends and supporting evidence.
- Use manufacturer limits before making changes.
