Quick answer
A practical Windows workflow for comparing sensor logs before and after a hardware or settings change.
These steps explain how to gather comparable evidence with HWiNFO on Windows, rather than treating a single sensor reading as a diagnosis.
Make runs comparable
Use the same computer, monitoring version, polling interval, power profile and workload. Write down exactly what changed between runs, such as a driver update or new cooling configuration.
Keep the same sensor names
A CSV export contains a timestamp and recorded sensor columns. Confirm that the columns refer to the same underlying sensors and units. Different device drivers and HWiNFO versions may expose different names.
Align the timing
Compare equivalent phases: settled idle, workload warmup, sustained load and cooldown. Do not compare the maximum of a ten-minute test with an average from a two-minute test.
Calculate meaningful differences
Inspect sustained trends and medians or ranges, not just one outlier. For CPU analysis, compare package power alongside temperature and effective clock; for GPU analysis include utilization, power and clock.
Keep an interpretation note
State which change was tested, what the logs support and what remains uncertain. Confirm repeated improvements across more than one run before drawing a conclusion.
Practical checklist
- Record hardware, driver and Windows versions.
- Use comparable conditions and one workload.
- Reset minimum and maximum readings before a run.
- Review sustained trends and supporting evidence.
- Use manufacturer limits before making changes.
