Quick answer
Establish repeatable idle and load sensor measurements before diagnosing a Windows PC.
These steps explain how to gather comparable evidence with HWiNFO on Windows, rather than treating a single sensor reading as a diagnosis.
Start with a repeatable baseline
Record the PC model, BIOS version, Windows build, graphics driver and room conditions. Restart the computer and allow background tasks to settle. Open Sensors-only mode, reset Minimum and Maximum readings, and record a short idle window before launching a known workload.
Record the right readings
For a CPU issue, record package temperature, package power, effective clock and utilization. For a GPU issue, record temperature, hot spot where available, power, clocks and utilization. For storage, record device temperature and health signals where exposed. Not every device provides every sensor.
Use consistent logging conditions
Use one polling interval and the same workload duration across sessions. Start CSV logging before the workload and stop after temperatures settle. Keep notes on fan mode, power plan and ambient temperature. A short peak and a sustained plateau tell different stories.
Compare without over-interpreting
Compare matching metrics from the same sensor under equivalent conditions. A change in BIOS, fan curve, graphics driver or workload can explain a difference. Do not compare two sensors solely because both include the word temperature.
When to stop
If the computer becomes unstable or reaches manufacturer-specified limits, end the test. Logs support diagnosis, but cannot prove that a part is defective without corroborating evidence.
Practical checklist
- Record hardware, driver and Windows versions.
- Use comparable conditions and one workload.
- Reset minimum and maximum readings before a run.
- Review sustained trends and supporting evidence.
- Use manufacturer limits before making changes.
